Phở: A Street Food Like no Other

When we think of street food, it often conjures up images of food on a stick or in a paper cup or bowl.  We think of food on the go and how you might walk while enjoying a snack or meal.  In Vietnam, however, there’s a different type of extremely popular street food: phở.

Phở on the streets of Vietnam.

Made with nutritious bone broth and filled with fresh, whole ingredients, phở is a regular staple in the Vietnamese diet.  Street vendors along the streets of Vietnam year-round serve steaming bowls of phở.  From north to south, regional variations of basic phở scatter the country, and street vendors capture the tastes and atmospheres of their regions in each bowl they serve.  Oftentimes, stalls offering phở will have a few seats near the cooking area where the broth simmers and leaves the air with the rich, fragrant aroma of comfort food.  Customers are served bowls of hot soup along with fresh herbs, vegetables, and condiments while they sit street side.

Rising popularity worldwide.

As Vietnamese people have moved and traveled around the world, they have brought their love for phở with them.  With all the worldwide travel, phở has made its way into people’s diets thousands of miles from where it originated.  With growing popularity globally, phở has become a regular occurrence everywhere, from the bustling city of Hanoi to cafes in Denmark and thousands of cities and restaurants in between.  What started as a regional dish in northern Vietnam has made its way into people’s hearts worldwide, one steaming bowl of broth and noodles at a time.
